11/12/2008 - Brown promises loan guarantee move
The Conservative Party has called on the Prime Minister to introduce a national loan guarantee scheme to help the declining economy.
Gordon Brown promised that measures would be made in the coming days as Tory MPs accused him of bringing the country to the "brink of bankruptcy".
Tory leader David Cameron urged the Government to underwrite lending to businesses to ensure small firms can stay afloat during what he described as the "deepest recession of the G7".
During Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Brown countered that there is already a loan guarantee scheme in place.
He said: "We led the way in recapitalising our banks. We led the way in arguing for a fiscal expansion which other countries are now taking up. And we will be leading the way in the next few days."
