31/12/2008 - Last Woolworths stores set to close
Woolworths stores across the country will continue to close over the next few days after the firm went into administration, with the last 200 shops due to stop trading on January 5.
The latest wave of closures includes two branches in Liverpool, along with stores in Northern Ireland, Wales, Jersey and others across England.
Administrators have confirmed that the company's longest trading branch, in Croydon, closed a day earlier than planned after it ran out of stock to sell.
The south London store has survived since 1912, seeing off the Depression, two world wars and numerous recessions.
It stayed on the same site when the Whitgift shopping centre opened in 1968, becoming part of the new mall.
In 2002, Woolworths Croydon celebrated its 90th anniversary and was heading towards its 100th until the credit crunch tipped the already teetering retail chain over the edge.
The chain as a whole outlived its US parent company, FW Woolworths, by more than 10 years.
