01/12/2008 - Tourists lured in by UK discounts
As high street prices keep falling the number of tourists coming to the UK to do their Christmas shopping is increasing.
A survey by lifestyle management company WhiteConcierge shows the UK is now better value for money because of the special offers and discounts available than the traditional Christmas shopping destinations of Germany and France.
Of the six countries surveyed, Dubai was said to offer the best value for money for Christmas gifts, followed by the United States, UK, Germany, France and China.
Nine of the 10 items surveyed could be bought for less in the UK than in Germany, and eight in 10 were cheaper than in France.
Will Holroyd, managing director of WhiteConcierge, said: "We're finding that this year we're getting more requests from our mainland European customers about booking trips to London to do their Christmas shopping.
"London has always had a special allure with the Christmas lights, but this year we're finding that people are also expecting to be able pick up some great bargains.
"Perhaps somewhat surprisingly (given the weaker pound), New York is still the ultimate Christmas shopping trip and we're still seeing strong demand for shopping trips there from our customers."
