28/11/2008 - Millionth contactless card issued

Barclaycard has welcomed its one millionth customer to its contactless payment card system.

Contactless payment cards enable people to pay for items that cost £10 or less by touching their card against a sensor.

The group said all newly issued Barclaycard Platinum credit cards would now include a contactless payment function.

Sandwich group Pret A Manger is the latest chain to introduce the technology to their stores. The group now has the contactless payment terminals in all of its London outlets, and it plans to introduce them to all of its 178 stores over the next six months.

A total of 6,000 shops in the UK have the technology to use the cards installed, including Coffee Republic and Eat as well as many independent retailers.

Research published by Barclaycard shows that 98% of people with a contactless payment card thought it was easy to use and 88% thought it speeded the paying process.

The Barclaycard OnePulse, Goldfish and Morgan Stanley cards also include the contactless technology.
