27/11/2008 - OFT publishes legal business guide

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has published a new guide for businesses on how to comply with competition and consumer laws.

The guide provides companies with information on changes to laws that affect them to make sure they maintain the correct trading standards.

The updated guide, which is aimed at smaller businesses, offers advice on illegal cartel activity, rules governing selling at a distance and how to ensure contracts are not unfair.

Specific changes in the law include certain business practices that are deemed misleading by the Consumer Protection Regulations, changes to advertising laws when identifying a competitor, amendments to the Estate Agents Act and new requirements for the credit consumer industry.

Ali Nikpay, OFT Senior Director of Policy said: "There have been a number of changes to legislation this year that affect how businesses operate in the UK. An important part of our role is to provide guidance to help companies self-comply. This new guide is an excellent tool for anyone dealing with consumers in a business context."
