14/04/2009 - Driving tests 'not thorough enough'

Employers are calling for a post-test driving qualification as they think young people are ill-equipped to cope with the demands of driving for work.

A survey of employers by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) found three in five bosses think the current learner driving training does not prepare 17 to 24-year-olds for the challenges of at-work driving.

Half questioned said they would like to see a post-test driving for work qualification introduced to cover situations not included in the current learner driver training and testing process, for example driving at night or in icy conditions.

The bosses said that new tests would produce safer drivers and reduce the number of accidents among young people who work drive in a variety of roles, including making sales and service visits and driving vehicles on sites.

A further 75% of said their young workers were driving in situations that they had no experience of and two-thirds of employers said their young employees were driving work vehicles that were larger than the car they had been trained or tested in.
