24/04/2009 - Great English local wins top honour
The top prize in the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence has gone to the great English pub for its "outstanding contribution to tourism".
Receiving the award on behalf of all publicans at a ceremony in London was actor Neil Morrissey, proprietor of the restored Ye Olde Punch Bowl Inn near Harrogate in Yorkshire.
The outstanding contribution to tourism award has previously gone to a range of winners, including the Queen, the Harry Potter films and Sir Paul McCartney and Liverpool.
VisitEngland, which organises the awards, said that pubs had been honoured "for the integral part they play in the fabric of the English way of life and the opportunity they provide for domestic and international visitors to meet local people and enjoy local foods and drink".
Other winners included Augill Castle in Cumbria for best bed and breakfast; The Venus Company in Totnes, Devon, which won the sustainable tourism award; the Gidleigh Park Hotel in Chagford, Devon, for best hotel; and Hidden Valley Park in Ilfracombe, Devon, which was voted best caravan holiday park.
