01/04/2009 - Post office fined over knife sale
A post office in London has been fined £1,750 after two children were sold a knife.
As part of an undercover trading standards' operation, an 11 and a 13-year-old visited a post office in South Harrow and purchased a craft-type knife.
The pair were not asked for proof of age or any other type of identification by the staff.
KP Retail, which trades as South Harrow Post Office, admitted selling the knife to someone under 18, contrary to the Criminal Justices Act 1988.
Although KP Retail said it trained staff about knife sale rules, it was unable to produce a record of such training.
As well as the fine, magistrates in Harrow ordered KP Retail to pay £752 costs to Brent and Harrow Council Trading Standards Service.
Bill Bilon, Brent and Harrow Council's director of trading standards, said: "I am pleased that the magistrates have also taken this sale seriously and I hope that this sentence will act as a clear deterrent for other traders."
