21/04/2009 - Takeaway 'too close to schools'

A takeaway in east London has been shut down for breaking new rules that ban fast food outlets from opening near schools, parks or leisure centres.

Bamboo Joint in Leytonstone is within the exclusion zones around Tom Hood Secondary School, Mayville Primary School and Langthorne Park. It was made the subject of a closure order during a raid by police and council officials and given three days to close down.

As well as banning kebab shops and other hot foot outlets near certain facilities, the rules also cover takeaways that are within 400 metres of each other and put a limit on total numbers in the town centre.

The measures were introduced after residents told Waltham Forest Council there were too many fast food outlets creating noise, litter and anti-social behaviour.

Council leader Clyde Loakes said: "Residents have told us they wanted us to take action against the proliferation of fast food outlets in this borough and today's operation shows we're doing exactly that.

"This fast food outlet has not got planning permission and has absolutely no chance of getting it, because of its proximity to a park and a school, so we're closing it down."
