17/08/2009 - Advice to keep night workers safe

Businesses in Brighton and Hove are being offered advice on how to protect people who work late at night.

Brighton & Hove City Council is targeting small businesses with the scheme encouraging owners to fit panic buttons and use CCTV to help staff feel safer, but also to prevent queues forming outside pubs and night clubs.

Ensuring staff are not alone on duty at night in businesses such as takeaways and hotels, which remain busy late into the night, is also hoped to prevent any incidents of late night violence occurring.

Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, cabinet member for environment, said: "We welcome eight million visitors a year and, because the tourist trade is so important, it's crucial that the night time economy is well managed for residents and visitors.

"Firm enforcement action means rowdy pubs have been closed; high-profile police patrols set the tone in the evening; and special all-night buses help people get home safely."

Measures already in place to protect staff and local people include a late night "safe space" and radio links between police and door supervisors.
