12/08/2009 - Builders bemoan theft and vandalism
Nine out of 10 construction industry professionals said they had experienced theft and vandalism in their business, research has shown.
The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) survey of 1,100 building industry professionals found that 92% of construction firms had experienced theft, while 91% had been the victims of vandalism.
Just under a third (30%) of those surveyed believed there had been an increase of crime in the industry over the last year, with many linking it to people trying to make money illegitimately during the recession. Only 8% felt crime rates had gone down in the industry.
"The results suggest a real need for site and project managers to be trained on how to prevent crime on construction sites and what measures should be taken if it does occur," said CIOB Deputy Chief Executive Michael Brown.
The CIOB`s research found that enhanced lighting linked to CCTV, registering plant and equipment and secure storage were the best deterrents to criminals.
