19/08/2009 - Company fined for rat infestation
A shop was found guilty of selling food contaminated with rat droppings and urine after a tip-off from a member of the public.
Environmental health inspectors discovered an infestation at the Poundland shop in Telford last November, acting on information from a member of the public who contacted the council to tell them they had spotted a mouse.
The company, based in Willenhall, admitted charges including having premises that were not clean, not having a procedure in place to control pests and failing to protect against the contamination of food. However, a charge of selling unfit food was withdrawn.
Poundland were ordered to pay a fine of £6,000 and £10,425 costs on August 17 at Telford Magistrates' Court.
