26/08/2009 - Consumers boost online sales in July
Figures show online sales increased significantly in July with shoppers spending £4.2 billion over the internet.
The latest data from IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index shows sales were up 15.7% on the previous month and 16.8% more than July 2008.
The driving force behind the sales boost was the clothing, footwear and accessories sector which saw sales grow 18% month on month and 17% year on year. In the last six months consumers have been encouraged by new summer lines and heavy discounting and promotions and spending figures show consumer confidence is returning.
But a consumer shopping expert believes it is the stress-free nature of shopping which is leading to a sales rally.
Cameron McLean, of online payment service PayPal, said: "Men love the quick and efficient nature of the internet, especially when it comes to buying technology and gadgets.
"Men are spending more online than women. The average online spend over the last six months was £2,602 for men compared to £1,930 for women."
But the figures show that women still spent more on groceries and clothing, suggesting that the female pound is still responsible for the growth in online sales of clothing, accessories and footwear year on year.
