25/08/2009 - DSA reveals lorry driver exams plan
The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has unveiled plans for a new qualification for all professional lorry drivers - known as the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
As well as holding the relevant vocational driving licence, from September 10, new drivers will have to pass the Driver CPC initial qualification exams.
The new exam will include a theory test with case studies to enhance drivers' understanding of the industry, as well as a new practical exam will test candidates' knowledge of vehicle safety and security.
To minimise delays, trainee lorry drivers will be able to prepare for these CPC tests and the licence-acquisition tests simultaneously.
Rosemary Thew, chief executive of the DSA, said: "The new Driver CPC qualification has been developed to raise and maintain the standards of lorry, bus and coach drivers.
"Lorry driving is a profession with a high level of responsibility. We are confident that the new qualification will help to reduce the human and financial costs of road accidents in the UK."
