20/08/2009 - Grandfather baffled by table bugs

Unidentified bugs crawling out of a nest of tables forced a grandfather to lock them in his shed, he has revealed.

Michael Harrison was baffled by the inch-long creatures emerging from the offending furniture as he did not know whether they were dangerous.

In 2005 Mr Harrison, 67, from Caerphilly in south Wales, bought two sets of the £179 nests of tables from Harveys furniture store.

The first bug appeared two years later, a second poked its head out the following year and a third has now emerged.

He explained: "My grand-daughter looked it up on the internet and came back with 'stick gurgler'.

"We don't know for definite that's what they are, but they're found in India where the wood is from.

"I just want to know what I should do with the bugs and for someone to tell me exactly what they are.

"The last one is still alive in a jar. I don't know if they're dangerous or if I should let it go."
