07/08/2009 - Help proposed for 'victim' tenants
Tenants facing immediate eviction because their house has been repossessed will receive limited help from the latest Government proposal.
The plan is intended to safeguard victims of shady landlords who have not informed their lender that they are letting the house, thus avoiding higher interest charges.
This means that tenants' contracts are unenforceable, with the result they can face eviction within days with no recompense or legal recourse.
Housing minister John Healey wants to change the law so that the 3,000 households which find themselves in this position get two months' notice to vacate the property.
He says: "It is wrong that through no fault of their own these families can find themselves out on the street with little prior warning.
"This will give them much-needed breathing space to find another home. But I also want to see more lenders use alternatives to repossession, such as appointing Receivers of Rent to collect rent."
