18/08/2009 - Hotel mistakenly offers cheap break

A hotel near Venice mistakenly offered a romantic weekend in the Italian lagoon city for one euro cent after a mistake on its website.

The four-star Crowne Plaza in Quarto D`Altino received booking for the equivalent of 1,400 room nights at the rate it posted on its website and says it intends to honour the deal taken up by the customers. A night at the hotel normally costs between 90 to 150 euro.

The mistake was made by human error at the offices of the Intercontinental Hotels Group in Atlanta, Georgia, which is the mother company of the hotel. The mistake is expected to cost the hotel group around 90,000 euros after customers booked rooms from October through 2010.

"Although a pricing error, IHG is committed to honouring the one-cent rate for guests who have a valid confirmation," said Monica Smith, the media relations manager for the hotels group in the US.

Around 228 guests made bookings on the website for the erroneous rate, which was meant to be an offer of a two-night stay at half price.
