21/08/2009 - New gas analyser to protect worker
A Stokesley-based firm has developed a device to safeguard hospitality workers who deal with potentially fatal gases from beer and soft drinks systems.
Analox says its new gas analyser Aspida is capable of detecting both high and low concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Staff exposed to high levels of CO2 may experience dizziness and confusion, while low levels of the gas can still result in headaches, nausea, unconsciousness and even death.
The device, worn by workers, sounds a "man down" alarm if it does not detect any movement in the wearer. If they still fail to respond, it sends out a 110 decibel alert for help.
Analox managing director Mark Lewis said they had developed the product following increased awareness of the risks involved for those in the hospitality industry.
He said: "These gases can't be detected by human senses so without technology such as this, potentially fatal situations would go undetected. In the case of a serious gas leak the Aspida is designed to save lives."
