12/08/2009 - Owner reunited with stolen violin
An antique violin stolen from its owner has been found on sale in a second-hand shop in Bath for £10, despite being worth £5,000.
The 1898 Stradivarius copy was stolen from musician Heather Cowan as she was performing at the Theatre Royal in Bath on June 6.
The instrument, called Matilda, was made in Glasgow by James W Briggs and was later identified by a shop assistant as the missing violin after an appeal in the local paper.
The shop had bought the instrument for just £10 not knowing it was stolen, and put it up for sale in the shop window.
But now the music teacher has been given back her prized instrument, which she has had for 26 years.
Ms Cowan said: "I am blown away that Matilda has been found.
"I am amazed that I have my violin again and that she is in good shape. I was so excited when I got the call to say she had been recovered."
