12/08/2009 - Plans 'will see tenants evicted'
Proposals to restrict the amount of properties that can be rented to multiple tenants have been criticised by planning groups.
The new proposals, which have been dubbed the "nimby's charter", would mean students, immigrants and those on low incomes would be evicted from affordable housing, the British Property Federation (BPF) has warned.
The plans have come about after complaints about the studentification of some areas, with residents complaining about anti-social behaviour and towns becoming empty in the holidays.
The British Property Federation, National Landlords Association, Residential Landlords Association and National Union of Students have all joined forces to condemn the move, citing that similar plans failed in Northern Ireland. They are asking for local management to consider regional circumstances and offer an efficient solution to the issues raised.
Liz Peace, chief executive of the British Property Federation, said: "You can't use the planning system for social engineering or to tackle anti-social behaviour."
