13/08/2009 - £10 curry paid for 13 years late

A mystery customer at a south Wales curry house has finally paid for his meal 13 years after forgetting to pick up the bill.

Restaurateur Samsul Bari received £10, plus £50 compensation, after the guilty epicurist contacted police via a letter explaining how he forgot to pay for a meal at an Indian restaurant in Mumbles, Swansea, in 1996, but could not remember the name of the establishment.

The diner's letter contained an explanation of where the restaurant was. However, the Seaview Tandoori had since been demolished and the police were forced to appeal through the media for help in finding the former owner.

Friends and family contacted Mr Bari after they read the appeal and remembered that he was the owner of the Seaview at that time.

Mr Bari, who now runs the Monsoon Indian Takeaway in Pembroke, said: "It's unbelievable. I'm laughing because it's been 13 years. Where was he before?

"One of my friends said perhaps he was a student at the time and is now in a big job and wanted to make a funny story by paying £60. I don't remember it because it's quite a long time ago and we were really busy at that time."
