24/08/2009 - Shop fined for knife sales to girls
A Croydon shop has been ordered to pay almost £2,000 for selling a pack of five knives to two 15-year-old girls.
H&T Trading company director Mark Carruthers pleaded guilty on behalf of the company to selling the packet of snap-off craft knives to the schoolgirls.
The company has taken steps to ensure there is no repeat incident - including training staff and altering procedures. H&T Trading was fined £800 and ordered to pay costs of £1,035.
Mr Carruthers explained to Croydon Magistrates' Court that he knew how dangerous knives could be, as the boyfriend of a staff member was stabbed to death in town last year.
"Shopkeepers have a vital role to play in keeping knives out of the hands of young people and off our streets. We won't hesitate to prosecute anyone who fails in this duty," said cabinet member for safety and cohesion Cllr Gavin Barwell.
