14/08/2009 - Student fined over nightclub damage

A student from Cambridge who caused £150,000 worth damage to a London nightclub in an "alcohol-fuelled act of buffoonery" has been fined by a judge.

Jonathan Stepien, 20, was fined £365 by a Southwark Crown Court judge after he was arrested at the Tiger Tiger nightclub in London's Haymarket on February 10.

The court heard that he was trying to beat his friend in a pull-up contest using the pipe of a sprinkler system, but as the drunk reveller built up momentum the pipe split in half, sending him crashing to the floor and water rushing out.

The club's insurance covered the expenses of the damage that involved replacement of wooden flooring in two bars, a restaurant and a lounge, as well as a ceiling in the cloakroom and the sprinkler pipe work.

The judge, after hearing that Stepien apologised to police after his arrest, said: "One of the words you used to describe yourself was a twot, I would certainly agree with that.

"The consequences of your stupid actions went far beyond what you could have possibly anticipated."
