21/08/2009 - Takeaway overrun by cockroaches
A takeaway business in Slough has been shut down and its owner forced to pay almost £14,000 in fines after health and safety inspectors found the restaurant crawling with cockroaches.
Fakra Shaheen, who owns Kinara Express, was told to hand over £13,792 by Maidenhead Magistrates` Court after the inspectors found the largest cockroach infestation they had ever seen.
The takeaway owner is now likely to find it very difficult to open up another restaurant with her pub and restaurant insurance possibly sky-rocketing as a result, especially because she received a fine in 2006 of £13,750 for similar offences.
When Ms Shaheen was initially due in court for this case she failed to attend and subsequently a warrant for her arrest was issued. She also left a second hearing early as a result of illness but was eventually hit with the fine.
Councillor Shafiq Chaudhry, Slough's commissioner for community and leisure, said: "All food businesses should take note - Slough Borough Council will not accept anything but the best in food safety and hygiene."
