04/08/2009 - Two in hospital following outbreak

A fish and chip shop in Wrexham is at the centre of a suspected E.coli outbreak after a mother and her three-year-old girl contracted the bug.

Karen Morrisroe-Clutton is understood to be on a life support machine in hospital after visiting the Llay Fish Bar in Wrexham, which has been closed while further investigations are carried out. She is being treated in Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Her condition has been described as "seriously ill".

Her daughter, who has not been named, is being treated for kidney failure at Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital. Two other people have contracted the infection but neither is in hospital. All four are from the Wrexham area.

Dr Judy Hart, consultant in communicable disease control at the National Public Health Service for Wales (NPHS), said: "The NPHS and Wrexham Council's environmental health officers are investigating four cases of E.coli O157 in three families from the Wrexham area. Two people have been hospitalised. As a precautionary measure, a food premises in Llay was closed by the council on July 30 while investigations are carried out."
