11/08/2009 - 'Winter white' leads to success

New and innovative ways must be found to attract visitors to Scotland, according to tourism minister Jim Mather.

He says he wants the "great country to remain one of the must see destinations in the world" and to be "open for business all year round".

The minister made his comments after it was announced that a record £63.5m was generated in Scotland through tourism last year, £17m higher than the previous year.

The "winter white" marketing drive, organised by tourist agency VisitScotland, was hailed as a particular success. The campaign, which is about to enter its fourth year, is aimed at highlighting what to see and do during the traditionally quieter winter months.

VisitScotland group product manager Suzanne Casey said: "This is great news for everyone in Scottish tourism and highlights the importance of working in partnership with our industry, especially during such challenging economic times, to get tourism growth back on track."
