02/12/2009 - Employees offered piracy reward

A leading software trade association has offered employees across the UK a £20,000 reward for 'shopping' their bosses and exposing software piracy in the workplace.

The cash incentive has been offered by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) as part of a drive to eliminate the use of illegal software after figures revealed that in London alone, some £149 million of pirated software has been installed and is in regular use.

Alyna Cope, of BSA, said: "Every year we investigate hundreds of companies in Britain for using unlicensed software, and many of them will face the prospect of legal proceedings.

"Businesses should think carefully about their software use and avoid wasting money on legal action, financial settlements and the unplanned purchase of legitimate software."

UK businesses are estimated to install pirated software valued at £1.49 billion every year.
