10/12/2009 - Hoteliers cleared of abusing Muslim
A Muslim hotel guest has lost her claim that she was insulted by the proprietors, who she said had likened the prophet Mohammed to a murderer and a warlord.
Liverpool hoteliers Benjamin and Sharon Vogelenzang had denied using threatening, abusive or insulting words which were religiously aggravated.
White British Muslim convert Ericka Tazi, 60, told city magistrates that she had been left traumatised after being abused while a guest at The Bounty House Hotel in Aintree.
She claimed that committed Christian Mr Vogelenzang had compared Mohammed to Saddam Hussein and Hitler, and laughed and shouted at her for wearing the hijab.
She also alleged that the couple had said that her Islamic dress was a form of bondage, and that she had provoked an argument by wearing it.
Mrs Tazi, who converted to Islam when she married a Muslim 18 months ago, had been staying at the hotel while she attended a pain management clinic at Aintree Hospital.
