21/12/2009 - Icy weather closes Botanic Garden

Cold weather has shut the doors of The National Botanic Garden of Wales as bosses feared the paths were too treacherous for visitors to walk on.

The icy conditions and freezing temperature have turned the paths round the 600-acre site in Carmarthenshire into an "ice rink".

David Hardy, a spokesman for the garden, said: "The plants are all looked after by heating and wrapping, it is the safety of the staff and visitors we were concerned about."

The decision was made after the the garden's caretaker lost control of his car on an icy  access road on Monday morning.

Mr Hardy added: "The caretaker has been with us for eight years and has never known anything like it.

"He lost control of his car trying to get in so other staff parked outside the site, they decided not to chance it.

"The fact that rain has fallen on ice has turned the place into an ice rink."

Hundreds of people were expected to visit the attraction on Monday to see Santa and the Carmarthen choir sing at the botanic garden. Last weekend around 1,700 people toured the site.
