31/12/2009 - Increase in 'mumpreneurs' predicted

A survey has found that the trend for "mumpreneurs", the name given to mothers who start their own businesses, is likely to continue to increase next year.

BT, who conducted the research, found that 15% of the mums surveyed had already started businesses, while one in 10 said it was an ambition they held.

They said they aspired to being businesswomen so they could work flexible hours and be their own boss, while staying at home with their children.

BT attributed the increase in entrepreneurial spirit to social networks which create opportunities for mums.

Ivan Croxford, general manager of digital marketing services at BT Business said: "We're witnessing the rise of the mumpreneurs. Mums across the UK are embracing the internet and keeping the UK's entrepreneurial spirit alive.

"We've seen evidence of this on our social business network, BT Tradespace where we're increasingly connecting with women starting their own businesses. We need to ensure that this vital community gets the right support to thrive."
