08/12/2009 - Pubgoers spend year of life at bar
The average British drinker will down 5,403 alcoholic beverages and spend over a year of their life propping up the bar, according to a study commissioned by UKTV channel Blighty.
Based on a weekly visit to their local, the average British male will also eat his way through 1,775 bar snacks and spend a total of more than 10,585 hours or 441 days in the pub during their lifetime.
The study - which coincides with the channel's five part observational documentary series Save Our Boozer that will see communities revamp their stricken pubs - also found the average British woman was likely to spend 8,154 hours, or 340 days over her lifetime, in a drinking establishment.
But the cost of visiting the local on a regular basis does not come cheap, with respondents spending an average of £10.88 every time, which equates to shelling out £38,624 over the course of a lifetime. When the additional cost of pub food or bar snacks is factored in, this amount rises to £65,249.
The research reveals the pub is still the focal point of communities across the UK, with 21% of people claiming they are more likely to know the name of their landlord rather than their neighbours.
Blighty channel head Adrian Wills said: "This survey highlights how the British pub is so ingrained in our culture despite the closure of at least 52 pubs every week."
