01/12/2009 - Pubs chain to create 10,000 jobs

As many as 10,000 jobs will be created by JD Wetherspoon, as the pubs chain plans to spread its wings by opening 250 new outlets over the next five years.

The firm, which opened its first pub in December 1979, is planning to invest a sum of £250 million on the new expansion project. The posts will include management positions, as well as bar and kitchen staff.

Currently, Wetherspoon employs 21,000 people and has 743 pubs across the UK. And it is hoping to open new pubs in locations including Sheffield, Livingston, Leominster, Otley, New Malden, Liverpool, Haverfordwest and Newcastle.

The company's chairman Tim Martin said: "Our pubs are extremely popular and we wish to build on their success by opening more. I am confident that the new pubs will be an asset to their respective towns and cities."

In September, Wetherspoon reported underlying pre-tax profits up 13.6% to £66.2 million and sales of £955.1 million in the year to July 26 - a record since the firm was incorporated in 1983.

The chain said that it concentrated on the key ingredients of standard, service, staff training and incentives in a bid to combat tough trading conditions.
