23/12/2009 - Thieves use digger to empty meters
Police have launched an investigation after thieves stole a JCB to dig up two parking meters and empty out the coins.
The digger was taken from a building site in St Albans, Hertfordshire, and the thieves escaped by smashing their way through a fence., police said.
Thought to be two men, the culpritsĀ droveĀ to a nearby car park in Holywell Hill and pulled up two pay and display parking meters to shake out £350 in coins.
The digger and one of the meters were found dumped in a river near the car park, while the other was abandoned on the river bank.
Hertfordshire Police's Pc Ed Messinger said: "We think the process these offenders went through would have proved quite noisy so someone must have heard or seen something."
