24/02/2009 - Barman burns £1,000 pub takings

A barman managed to burn £1,000 of pub takings after hiding the cash in the oven for safe keeping.

Luke Woolston, 19, cashed up before putting the notes inside an oven at the Jolly Farmers in Ormesby, Norfolk.

A few minutes later, the barman smelt burning and realised that the oven was switched on.

Landlord Martin Talbot, 36, revealed that Mr Woolston had owned up to the mistake by text message.

He described it as "an act of stupidity", and said: "I thought I could handle it in one of two ways - either give him a strong talking to or tell two or three customers, thinking it would be round the village in no time and his life would be hell for two or three weeks. It seems to have worked."

Mr Talbot believes he can salvage some of the charred notes.

"As long as you can read the serial numbers, the Bank of England normally credit you with the amount," he said.
