23/02/2009 - Castle shortlisted for B&B prize

The shortlist for tourism's "Oscars" awards includes a bed-and-breakfast establishment housed in a 19th-century castle.

Augill Castle at South Stainmore in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, is one of eight establishments competing for the Enjoy England Awards for Excellence B&B prize.

The annual awards include 15 categories and are sponsored by the Caravan Club and organised by VisitEngland. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in York on St George's Day - April 23.

Poston Mill in Peterchurch, Herefordshire, where guests stay in converted medieval cottages in an apple orchard, is included on the sustainable tourism award shortlist.

Hugh Taylor, VisitEngland chairman, said: "On the 20th anniversary of the awards, we are delighted that there is such a broad range of exciting, high-quality holiday experiences on offer in England, particularly as holidaymakers are looking to take a break closer to home this year.

"Value for money is another major consideration as purse strings continue to tighten. Each year the judging proves more and more difficult, which is a positive reflection on the rising quality of the tourism offering in England."
