18/02/2009 - Guide to advise struggling employers
A new guide has been created to help to businesses seeking advice on how to handle redundancies and lay-offs.
The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) have both reported a huge increase in the number of employers contacting them during the recession. They expect demand to grow further as more businesses struggle to cope with the downturn.
It is hoped the guide will aid businesses in making the best decision to meet the "present challenges while preparing for the future".
CIPD's chief executive Jackie Orme said the guide encourages employers to motivate the workforce to work through the current climate as a team.
She said: "Many employers are looking to their employees to develop new ways of working to cut costs and boost productivity, often in an environment where people have lost colleagues to redundancy. In these circumstances the extent to which employees are engaged and willing to go the extra mile for the organisation is critical."
