19/02/2009 - Mouse droppings found in cafe food
A cafe owner from Middlesbrough has been fined £1,200 for breaching food hygiene laws after health officers discovered food contaminated with mouse droppings.
Environmental health officers found general poor cleanliness, including mouse droppings, when they visited the Ali Baba cafe in Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough, on August 28 last year.
Asad Gharib was ordered to pay legal costs of £550 as well as a £15 victim surcharge for not keeping his cafe clean.
Environmental health officer Russell Butchers said: "Conditions in this cafe presented an imminent risk of injury to health. We found unfit food, dirty work surfaces and equipment, and mouse droppings throughout the premises."
Mr Gharib was charged under the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006 with failing to prevent a pest infestation, failing to protect food from contamination, failing to keep his premises and equipment clean, failing to register his food business with the council and failing to implement and maintain effective food safety procedures. He pleaded guilty to all the charges at Teesside Magistrates' Court.
