03/02/2009 - Workers advised to stay at home

Businesses up and down the country are suffering as a result of the extreme winter weather after workers were told to stay at home rather than attempt to get into the office.

Disruption caused by the snow which started falling on Sunday night, and continued throughout Monday and beyond, is expected to cost British industry millions of pounds.

Train services have been severely disrupted and a number of websites of rail companies, including the National Rail site, crashed under the weight of enquiries from people wanting to know if they could get to work. Rail passengers were advised not to travel unless absolutely necessary, while London's six million bus users were left stranded when all services were suspended.

Firms in London told staff not to even attempt to travel into the capital, and companies were making arrangements for those staff who did make it to the office to stay in hotels rather than attempt to get home after work.
