20/01/2009 - Armed robber targets shop staff
The owner of a travel agency in Wigan was left counting the cost after a raider held staff at gunpoint before making off with cash.
The incident happened at Thomas Cook in Market Street, Atherton, when the offender forced staff to put cash into a plastic carrier bag. However, as he made off, a dye pack among the money exploded.
Police have issued a description of the suspect, saying he was white, around 5ft 7in to 5ft 8in, of medium build and wearing a black tracksuit with a red stripe down the arms and trousers.
"This was an incredibly frightening experience for the people inside the travel agents," said Detective Sergeant Graham Rigby of Wigan CID. Even though no one was injured and the gun was not fired, the fear caused by having a gun pointed at them will linger long after today.
"This man seems to have no problems using a gun to threaten people and we need to catch him. If anyone saw him before or after the robbery, please get in touch. When the dye triggered, smoke could also be seen so he would have been quite noticeable as he ran down the road."
