16/01/2009 - Boom for local garages expected

Mechanics across the country have been told they can expect to see "people queuing around the block" as drivers opt to keep their old cars instead of splashing out on a new model.

According to internet tyre retailer BlackCircles.com, cash-strapped drivers will hold off making a major purchase such as a car over the next 12 months as the economic downturn starts kick in, increasing the demand for mechanics.

In a survey only 6% of 1,500 respondents said they would definitely buy a new car this year despite fears of a recession. However, half said they were unlikely to make a purchase in 2009 and a further 35% ruled it out entirely.

Michael Welch, managing director of BlackCircles.com, said: "Buying new cars falls into the major purchases bracket and it's no surprise to see people hold on to their cars - and their money - for the time being.

"Drivers have to maintain their vehicles, no matter what, so in a time of doom and gloom, it's good to hear that people will be queuing around the block at their local garage."
