29/01/2009 - Council pulls plug on kebab disco

A kebab shop in Newcastle which entertains late night guests with impromptu discos has been told to switch off the music because it does not have a licence

Munchies - billed the Best Kebab Shop in Newcastle - thanks the late night raves for its popularity. The eatery in Newcastle's Bigg Market, allows revellers to continue partying long after nightclubs close their doors.

But the late night revelling has come under threat from Newcastle City Council which says the restaurant, owned by Kemal Guclu, does not have a licence to play music.

Peter Sweet, head of licensing and environmental protection at the council, said: "Under the Licensing Act 2003, music other than incidental background music and dancing are regulated activities and we have advised the owners of Munchies accordingly.

"Munchies have been given a warning about permitting unlicensed activities on the premises and will require a variation of the existing licence - which is for the sale of hot food, if it wishes to allow music and dancing."
