23/01/2009 - New flood work to protect firms
Flood prevention work is due to begin in a Gloucestershire town to protect homes and businesses after 57 properties were flooded in July 2007.
Companies' premises in Coleford were swamped after torrential rain proved too much for the town's drainage network. But now work is to begin alleviating the problems in a bid to reduce the risk of flooding.
The work, which is to be carried out by Gloucestershire Highways and is the first in a long line of measures being introduced, will replace traditional concrete kerbing with a new kerb drainage system that will allow water to drain more freely from the streets.
Cllr Martin Quaile, deputy leader of Forest of Dean District Council, said: "We're working very closely with colleagues at the county council to ensure that Coleford, and a number of other areas in that district that have been affected by flooding in recent times, benefit from the resources and funding the county council is providing in order to minimise future flooding risks in the Forest of Dean."
The kerb drainage system work will begin in February and will be followed by work to improve surface water drainage in the summer.
