28/01/2009 - Squatters evicted from £22m house
The owners of a £22 million commercial property in London`s exclusive Mayfair district have succeeded in removing a notorious band of squatters.
The Central London County Court has granted an order for immediate possession to owners Timekeeper Limited. Bailiffs are expected to move in immediately.
The High Court Sheriff will claim possession of the house, which is two linked buildings in Charles Street and Clarges Mews. The squatters were previously ousted from a building in nearby Upper Grosvenor Street.
A solicitor for Timekeepers, Andrew Jeffrey, said: "We were granted a possession order forthwith, which means they have been evicted and were told by the judge they must leave the property."
One of the squatters, luckyjim, announced on an internet blog that the judge "recognised we had not damaged the building - an accurate but generous statement since he's never been inside - and that he saw we'd made beneficial use of it."
He described how he and half a dozen others had slept in a communal room while living on free food thrown away at the New Covent Garden fruit and vegetable market in south London.
