30/01/2009 - Thieves use digger in ram-raid

Several shops, a post office and a bank have fallen prey to ram-raiders who they cut a swathe through a Buckinghamshire town in a mechanical digger, police said.

The robbers started smashing into the front wall of the HSBC bank in Flackwell Heath, near High Wycombe, in order to steal its cash machine. Wearing masks and dark clothing, they secured the scene armed with axes while the digger smashed into buildings, according to witnesses.

After tearing down the wall of the bank, the digger then smashed into the post office. It finished by backing into a Chinese takeaway next to the post office.

Minutes later, the thieves escaped in a dark-coloured Audi, leaving behind the digger and a white pickup truck. They failed to get away with the cash point, which was found among rubble in the post office.

Det Con Chris Mavers said: "Although we do have witnesses, I would like to hear from anyone who saw the incident, the vehicles speeding off or who may have committed the attack."
