10/07/2009 - British 'worst tourists in Europe'

British tourists may be considered the worst behaved travellers in Europe, but the rest of the world doesn't agree.

According to a survey by travel company Expedia, European hoteliers also considered British travellers to be the messiest, the meanest tippers and the biggest complainers. British hoteliers held a similar view, polling their fellow citizens as the worst tourists after Americans.

Jonathan Cudworth, head of product marketing at Expedia.co.uk, said: "Being voted the worst tourists in the world by our closest neighbours highlights the fact that the 'Brits Abroad' moniker is a label we still haven't managed to shrug off."

But on a global scale the only country to beat the British to the best tourists title overall was Japan. Britons were also considered the best dressed tourists after the Italians and the French.

The survey of 4,557 hoteliers world-wide revealed that Japanese nationals were perceived to be the quietest, the most polite, the cleanest and those least likely to complain.

French tourists topped the other extreme, with hoteliers saying they were the worst tourists, and among the stingiest tippers. The loudest of all were Americans, Italians and Spanish tourists, while Canadians, Germans, Australians, Japanese and Britons were considered among the most polite.
