02/07/2009 - Call to ban pub cigarette machines
Cigarette machines should not be allowed in pubs, according to a survey, showing that most people also support the smoking ban.
Said Elspeth Lee, spokeswoman for Cancer Research UK, which commissioned the poll: "These results show there's huge public support for the new measures to protect young people from tobacco. Smoke-free laws have been a real success, not only in protecting UK workers from second-hand smoke but also helping smokers to quit."
The survey found that three quarters are in favour of getting rid of the machines, and a similar number want cigarettes to be kept out of sight in shops. And as far as the smoking ban is concerned, three quarters said they support it, with more than half saying they are "strongly in favour".
Cancer Research's ongoing Smoking Toolkit study shows that the ban was followed by a rapid rise in the number of smokers who quit - 800,000 - although this was followed by a slight rebound.
