21/07/2009 - Move to tackle under-age drinking
Leicester police tested off-licences in the first week of school summer holidays in a campaign to tackle under-age drinking as well as reduce anti-social behaviour.
As part of their Safer Summer drive, police visited 57 off-licences close to schools, parks and other open spaces, and said "were very disappointed with the results" when they saw 12 of these shops sold alcohol to a 15-year-old posing as a customer.
Four of the shops will face a review of their licence after repeated failures, and the shop assistant who sold the alcohol will be issued with an £80 fine following an inquiry.
Pc Jon Webb, from the City Centre Violence and Disorder Team, said the test purchases coincided with the last day of the school term over fears that some youngsters might be out drinking to celebrate the start of the holidays.
He said: "We will continue to carry out further checks throughout the summer and urge anyone who suspects their local shop is selling alcohol to under-18s to contact the police."
