30/07/2009 - Nurseries `should ban soft toys`
Toys provided by nurseries and childminders may be spreading swine flu, according to guidance from the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
It has recommended that soft toys, which are difficult to clean, should be banned, while sharing crayons and musical instruments should be discouraged.
Meanwhile, hand washing and cleanliness should be stepped up while avoiding school assemblies or bringing children together in large crowds in enclosed spaces.
The advice is contained in documents issued by the department in a bid to reduce the spread of infection in the event that sine flu reaches epidemic proportions.
It says: "Clean hard toys after use as the virus can survive on hard surfaces. Try to avoid children sharing soft toys, as these are hard to clean adequately; you may find it easier to avoid using soft toys altogether."
Children who show symptoms should be isolated, and a member of staff nominated to look after affected children, who should not sit within a metre of other youngster unless they need help.
