01/07/2009 - Online tyre safety advice launched
A tyre safety organisation has launched a campaign to increase awareness among commercial vehicle operators about the dangers of driving on defective or worn out tyres.
TyreSafe has introduced a truck-specific section on its website and is producing handouts to provide additional information for drivers, fleet managers and inspectors.
The group says that poorly-maintained tyres not only increase the risk of accidents, they also lead to high fuel consumption and frequent vehicle repairs.
Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe, said: "Making tyre maintenance a key priority allows commercial fleet operators to help ensure the safety of their drivers and reduce the number of accidents caused by defective tyres on our roads."
Data released by the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) for 2007/08 shows an MoT failure rate of 36.5% for HGVs, with defective tyres being the second most common reason for failures.
TyreSafe says that fleet operators have an even greater responsibility for providing a safe working environment for their drivers.
Under the Health and Safety Offences Act that came into force in January 2009, a firm found guilty of offences such as fitting illegal tyres or faulty brakes can face a maximum penalty of £20,000.
