29/07/2009 - Overcharged shoppers await refund
A number of disgruntled shoppers are due to be reimbursed after technical problems with Bank of Scotland's electronic card terminals saw them charged twice for purchases.
The bank, part of Lloyds Banking Group, said only a "small number" of people from across the UK had been affected, though a spokesman could not give the exact number.
The spokesman said: "Yes, we have had an issue where a small number of customers who have used these payment terminals have been double charged for their purchases.
"We have fixed the problem and will make sure any customers affected are reimbursed in full by tomorrow at the latest."
Businesses reported having to deal with enraged customers, furious in the belief that it was the stores which had charged them extra. Some shops even reimbursed the upset customers themselves as a way of appeasing them.
Chris Parton, owner of the Highland Soaps Company's shop in Fort William, in Inverness-shire, Scotland, told the BBC News website: "Some people have come to the shop very angry about it, because they think it is us who have charged them twice."
